Hymns: A Mega-dose of Rock-solid Theology

At the Women of Faith Conference this year, the theme was "Infinite Grace." When asked what her favorite hymn was, Luci Swindoll said "A Mighty Fortress is Our God." She said she loves hymns because they're so full of rock-solid theology, and that she loves this hymn in particular because it covers so many of the bases.

God has been drawing my heart to hymns more and more over the last few years, and since the conference He's laid song after song on my heart. I go to "cyberhymnal" and print out the words to each song, and then I pray through them. God is, well, He's indescribable! I'm beginning to understand just a tiny bit more what "infinite" really means.

This is my hymn for this season. Look at these words and think about them:

Be Thou my Vision, O Lord of my heart;
Naught be all else to me, save that Thou art.
Thou my best Thought, by day or by night,
Waking or sleeping, Thy presence my light.

Be Thou my Wisdom, and Thou my true Word;
I ever with Thee and Thou with me, Lord;
Thou my great Father, I Thy true son;
Thou in me dwelling, and I with Thee one.

Be Thou my battle Shield, Sword for the fight;
Be Thou my Dignity, Thou my Delight;
Thou my soul’s Shelter, Thou my high Tower;
Raise Thou me heavenward, O Power of my power.

Riches I heed not, nor man’s empty praise,
Thou mine Inheritance, now and always;
Thou and Thou only, first in my heart,
High King of Heaven, my Treasure Thou art.

High King of Heaven, my victory won,
May I reach Heaven’s joys, O bright Heaven’s Sun!
Heart of my own heart, whatever befall,
Still be my Vision, O Ruler of all.

Doesn't that just make our spirits soar? If it doesn't, I pray we'll seek God for His vision.

It's refreshing to hear a young person, young to me, appreciate the great old hymns. This one you posted is really great.
Just a side note, I think Luci Swindoll is about the most motivating speaker ever.

I have always loved hymns. Probably because I was raised Baptist. :) Even as a young child, my favorite hymns were "Crown Him With Many Crowns", "Amazing Grace," and "How Great Thou Art."

You're right, Luci's great. Her brother Charles is awesome, too. I once listened to a message of his called "Raising Daughters of God" about 20 times in a row. Today, I listened to my current favorite hymn, "Be Thou My Vision" for 3 hours straight. Do you see a compuslive streak here? :)
